The second chapter

wow! It’s getting even more intense as i progress throughout the story. I think that Curley’s wife is going to play an important role in this story because she flings herself at any guy while she’s married and her husband is in the visinity. Lennie you can tell is attracted to her, he even tells george this on pg. 32 of M&M. George of course gets angry like always and tells Lennie to stay away from her. But i think george just doesn’t want him to get into trouble because of this girl. I think it’s a good idea because she’s just trouble waiting to happen. Curly, her husband, is an even bigger problem for the “cousins” he’s already been defiant toward Lennie.. What problems are in store for Lennie and why does everyone pick on him?

On pg 25-26 i believe this is a foreshadowing effect:

“An’ you won’t let the big guy talk, is that it?”
“He can talk if he wants to tell you anything.” He nodded slightly at Lennie.

“We jus’ come in,” said Lennie softly.

Curley stared levelly at him. “well, nex’ time you answer when you’re spoken to.” He turned toward the door and walked out, and his elbows were still bent allitle.”

I believe that Curly is going to start something involving these two guys. Since his dad is the owner of the ranch he has a great oppurtunity to. I wonder where the last ranch was and why exactly they left it. maybe it was the same thing? im not quite sure what will happen but i have a feeling Curley and Lennie will have a battle of some sort…maybe a breakdancing battle!??!? ok not so much but something is going to happen for these poor dudes. sad day…

All you want to know about Steinbeck…John Steinbeck

November 17, 2006

“Guys like us, that work on ranches, are the loneliest guys in the world. . . . With us it ain’t like that. We got a future. We got somebody to talk to that gives a damn about us.  . . . because I got you to look after me, and you got me to look after you, and that’s why” (14).
~Of Mice and Men

I belive that this passage is very important to the story because the protagonist is stating how their life is. It sums up how they were living, how they will keep on living, and probobly the way their life will be in the future. The only people they have to depend on are each other or else know one will bother to help them out. It’s sounds like the two men have had a very rough life so far but in the end it makes them stronger. I just wonder whats going to happen to their relationship after they move to the ranch, will it get better or get worse?

The Grapes of Wrath–Of Mice and Men

I belive the setting in the Grapes of Wrath is around the 1920’s era or somewhere close because they have a major southern accent and it’s a tough life working on raches other than the huge buildings we have now. I think in might be the same in M&M because its pretty much the same, ranches. The difference in the Grapes of Wrath is that we know its in the great depression and they are just trying to live out their lives with enough food in their bellies, but in M&M I’m not so sure because I’ve only read the first chaper. In both stories though right off the bat you know that Steinbeck writes about real hardcore people going through a life that is tough and real. His writing isn’t  sugar coated and thats what I like about it, it gets down to the nitty gritty.

painters going emo

November 9, 2006

Painters express mood by the colors they use or just the things that they paint. For example if “starry night” by van gogh captures the beauty of the night sky by using hues of blue and swirls instead of the regular black and yellow for the skies. Painters also have alot going for them when they paint faces. Faces express so much but also so very little. You can perceve tradgedy on face but not why the person is tragic in a painting. With dark and duller hues it expresses a dull or depressing mood. Brighters colors will express more of a happy go lucky mood. Depending on the painter and how he/she feels it will be expressed in the painting by the movement, expression, or colors.

I have to agree with bear on this. Writers do use there imaginations but the only do about one scene per picture for what the writer writes in a whole book. It’s easier for a painter to capture a few lines out of the story then the whole plot. If the painter captured the whole plot it would give the story away and be way to messy.Freakyfun and I have some of the same things going on in our heads. We both agree that color is a major factor and so is the painted faces. The things that the painter paints can also relate to how they feel or what their outlook on the situation is.

beauty is just a word in the dictionary

November 7, 2006

This is a crazy video I can’t believe that they actually showed how it really does happen. I mean at least one company is showing how they make people perfect and I do believe that people are striving for a computer image. That’s pretty much all it is anymore just a fake person in a billboard. People are beautiful but using the technology we have today it makes the picture perfect. It’s not even human and I don’t understand why they just don’t leave the picture of the girl how it is because she is pretty without the eyebrow lift and the perfect hair. Nobody is perfect and people kill themselves just to look like a billboard. I guess it’s necessary because you have to be perfect to fit in but the truth to the matter is nobody is perfect and people can’t seem to realize it. Sometimes I glance at the billboards with the beautiful people and wonder why I’m not perfect like them. We buy the stuff that they sell, like it could be a campaign for make-up and we would buy it because the person wearing it is crazy beautiful. It’s funny how the world works.
