Hemmingways style

October 30, 2006

Well his style had a huge life background to it like there was an easy to understand moral to it. It was really easy to read and it had a lot of thoughts going around in the proagonist mind and less dialog. I believe these are some of the thoughts that he had in his lifetime somewhere. His  writing has white lines in it which leaves open space to put your own memories into. He doesn’t really add any glitter to the story he gets right to the point without going into detail about the surrounding area or anything. I think he should add some more description at least in some places because it’s just blah without them. It’s the kind of book you wouldn’t remember just because of the description maybe because of the short to the point “Hemmingway” story.

what was hemmingway like?….ohhhhh

October 26, 2006

In the radio broadcast we just listened to gave a lot acounting his life in particular and his writing style. In the broadcast they said that he was a very bleak and to the point writer. He didn’t sugarcoat his story he just gave to the point stories making them a top item in the bookstores. I guess he was looked upon as an idol to all the yonger wanna be writers. Go hemmingway! Hemmingway states that the wrier should be driven by the writing not any critic or random person. He had a hard life dealing with depression and injury he committed suicide. I believe he did this because maybe his books did drive him over the edge. In the end he tryed to top all of his previous book but failed. But people disagree and state that he was the creator of modern literature. Critics say that he used few adverbs and had a bleak out look on life. Omition was the only way hemmingway gave out his fear. I believe his fear was of nohingness, and being alone. Some of his stories confront fear head on.He was 62 years old when he passed away on July 21, 1889. Was Old Man and the Sea an analogy of Hemmingway’s real being?

courageousness from the cowardly lion

October 24, 2006

Page 106 in the first paragraph:
“Besides, he thought, everything kills everything else in some way. Fishing kills me exactly as it keeps me alive. The boy keeps me alive, he thought. I must not deceive myself to much.”

I believe this passage is important because if you really turn this idea around in your head for awhile it is true. I’m starting to wonder if this is foreshadowing the end of this book. Or maybe it will keep him alive? I’m not sure it’s all pretty frazzling. I just hope we finish the book to see what really does happen.

    Questions about OMS:

There was a question asking what personality is really his because he talks to himself but thinks the total opposite….split personality 101.  It’s quite confusing to read because you don’t really get the feel for the protagonist because he’s literally always changing his mind. Who knew reading could be difficult? Maybe he’s a psycho killer…DaDanaaaa! Why does he man always contradict himself? Maybe he has low self esteem because he’s emo about his life and he had a hard childhood, who knows. Sometimes during the book though he speaks out loud and I believe that is to try to convince himself that he is stronger than he really is, resulting in more courage. He should go on The Wizard of OZ and get courageousness from the cowardly lion.

IS IT CHICKEN OR TUNA?

October 18, 2006

Some symbolic symbols in the story were like the huge fish which is a swordfish. The old man is starting to see black spots and starting to get weaker but still he insists that the fish will die first….But i wonder will he die first? My theory is that maybe they will both die at the same time. Mr. Sheehy just read a line out of the book about the old man not killing the sun, stars, or moon, but killing the brothers in the sea..the fishies!
My quote was “He looked across the sea and knew how alone he was now..” by The Old Man and the Sea. The symbolism in that quote is probobly about how independent he is and maybe some more things but I’m not quite sure at the exact moment. But I will get back to you on that note. We also had to draw a picture so I drew the old man in the “thinking man’s” position in the skiff alone in the gynormous sea. In the background is the  fin of the wanna be captured fish. Tell me what you think because Mr. Sheehy is running out the door with my weird  picture. Enjoy kids! …*SNIFF SNIFF* POOR DOLPHINS!

seaweed kinnda stinks a little bit

To day in The Old Man and the Sea I noticed how the old man ties up his lines with the sardeens on the hook without the hook showing because it will attract more to the huge fishies.  He has four different lines at different lenght intervals and I also noticed that he doesn’t like man of wars. But hey, who does, I mean common they can kill you with the goo-ee tenticles. Gwosssssss….

The Old Man and the Sea part 2

September 26, 2006

In the story I’m noticing how the man and the boy have a huge bond that not even the parents have with their son. This boy doesn’t really have a bond with the fishermman that he is working with…hmmm I wonder why? But anyways it hasn’t reallly specifyed about why the boy is not close with his new boss. But they man and the boy have been together since the boy was 5 so that gives some leverage to their relationship. I wonder how old the man is? I’m also noicing that the man is very poor, I wonder why he’s so poor if he’s a fisherman because there is always fish in the sea. Has he been catching anything because the paragraph we just read said that the old man only eats one a day if even. I feel bad for the old guy because he lives in a shack and he doesn’t even have shoes for the upcomming winter. I wonder where they live….? They boy really cares about the old man and I suspect that the boy is funding they old guy because it talked about the boy wanting to buy shoes and blankets and all sorts of stuff for this old man. I wish they would hurry up and tell me the names of the characters because “old man” and “the boy” is getting harder to type…phew. Oh Mr. sheehy just said the old mans name is Santiago…cool dude

Dance, Dance, Dance, Dance

September 22, 2006

We just started reading The Old Man and the Sea like 15 minutes ago. I think it will be a good little book. I have a feeling thought that the lead character is going to catch a humungo fish because on the cover it has a lot of foreshadowing with a million foot swordfish. I have to admitt it’s totally awesome. I remember a few summers ago my family and I went to missouri river in he middle of the state but we didn’t catch anything. It realates a lot to the beggining of the story because they are talking about old memories and about fishing when they don’t catch a single fish. I didn’t feel like jumping in the river durring our vacation because the current was to vicious and I didn’t feel like getting swept away…..The End
